The cloud whisks him away to the "Sector 7" floating cloud factory, a bizarre sky station that looks like a Victorian design for a submarine.

Hiding behind his new cumulonimbus friend, the boy enters an area resembling Grand Central Station (complete with "Arrivals" and "Departures" boards) and watches officious human types in uniform giving the clouds their weather assignments. When the clouds complain to the boy that their assigned shapes are boring, he, a talented artist, creates new blueprints for them. The stuffy grownups are furious when clouds start emerging in the shape of fantastic fish; they shout at the clouds, tear up the new designs, and escort the boy back to his school group. Here, a boy on a class trip to the Empire State Building discovers that the landmark, enveloped by fog, is nonetheless a gateway to incredible vistas indeed. The boy is soon befriended by a jolly cloud that whisks him off to a sort of Grand Central in the sky, which functions as headquarters for clouds in the metro areaASector 7. Giant tubes funnel the clouds in and out of a designated waiting area; boards overhead track arrivals and departures (e.g., "Altocumulus" Dep. 1:03, Tube 21W). Uniformed bureaucrats keep their eyes on the skies in various locations (Hoboken, Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc.) by means of TV-type monitors, and issue each departing cloud an architectural-type drawing with precisely delineated shapes and measurements to which it must conform. The complex is rendered with the hard edges and clear definition of ultra-realism, a style that serves as an effective foil for both the wispy clouds and the story's fantastical premise. Magnificent as the "Cloud Dispatch Center" is, it is only the beginning. For the boy, having discerned the clouds' dissatisfaction with their pedestrian assignments, alters the drawings and specs so that the clouds begin to transform into blowfish, angel fish and octopus shapes. Even after the unamused bureaucrats discover his creations and summarily return him by cloud taxi to his classmates, the boy's influence persists: an elaborate tropical-sea-in-the-sky astonishes his friends (and strangers on the street), draws fish to the surface of the river, and has the city's indoors cats pawing at their windowpanes in excitement. Starting from a simple, almost obvious ideaAonce one has thought of itAWiesner offers up an ingenious world of nearly unlimited possibilities. His paintings, at once highly playful and purely pristine, contain such a wealth of details that they reveal new discoveries even after repeated examinations. The frame-within-a-frame that depicts the boy's first glimpse of the Sector 7 complex, for instance, is a mesmerizing study of the variegated colors and textures of clouds. The work as a whole is an inspired embodiment of what seems to be this artist's approach to story and vision: the more you look, the more there is to see. Ages 5-up. On the top observation deck amid hovering clouds, the boy's red scarf and hat are spirited off and onto a white, puffy cloud figure (whose face is a cross between Little Toot and Casper the Ghost). The boy's new cloud pal transports him to Sector 7 and the Cloud Dispatch Center, where, akin to a train station, arrivals and departures are scheduled. The boy is introduced to other cloud forms and learns how they are shaped and channeled across the country as designated by individual blueprints. When the artistic youngster draws fanciful fish and the clouds assume their shapes, the dispatchers are shocked and ban the boy from the sector. His cloud pal returns him to the class outing, where he floats off the elevator onto the school bus. The climatic finish amuses and puzzles everyone in the story and will delight readers. The artist's fascination with floating and flying escapades is as free spirited and frolicsome as in his Tuesday (Clarion, 1991), Free Fall (Lothrop, 1988), and June 29, 1999 (Clarion, 1992). These words must be spoken to the baby in the presence of his or her mother and father if at all possible. Such speech helps everyone-newborn and parents-to find their places in the altered world created by the birth. When such words are not present, physical symptoms and illness may emerge.

Talking to Babies is the first book to show how the "talking cure" can help infants and their parents. The Paris-based president of La Cause des Bebes (The Interests of the Baby), Szejer is a practicing psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, and she opens her book with a compelling case anecdote of a new mother who draws the blinds to her room, shuts the lights, and claims that in the two days since her birth, her infant hasn't urinated. It is Szejer's gift to not only dramatize the situation clearly and with gravity, but to proceed with a caution that allows the anxious mother to locate apposite sources of trauma in her own childhood. From there come six chapters exploring everything from "A Closer Look at the Baby Blues" to "The Child Given Up at Birth," from the perspectives of child, mother, and (often) hospital nursing staff, and more often involving the present than the past. Szejer writes with a clear, calm, unpretentious authority similar to that of Mary Pipher, and is able to use her experiences working at Antoine Beclere Hospital, which had some of the first "kangaroo units" (for early parent-child bonding with at-risk infants) in France, as springboards to talking about everything from the effects of the death of one twin in the womb on the one born alive (as well as therapies for both the surviving child and the parents) to a newborn's refusal to eat, to racism's role in parent-child relations.

Dr. J.P.Verma is a professor of statistics at the Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education, Gwalior and has experience of more than three decades of teaching applied statistics to the students of different disciplines. Professor Verma possesses three masters degree in statistics, psychology and computer application besides a PhD degree. He has the unique distinction of holding Ist position in MSc (Statistics) from Kanpur university and Ist position in MA (Psychology) from Jiwaji University Gwalior. He has been a visiting faculty in many of the well known institutes of management such as Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Indian Institute of Travel and Tourism Management, Prestige Institute of Management etc. He has guided six PhD candidates successfully and has four books in the area of statistics & research, and 28 research papers/articles to his credit.

 

Prof. Verma has acted as an advisor for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), New Delhi for various assignments since 2005. He served as an officer on special duty to the Vice Chancellor for two and half years and looked after the Administration, Planning and Implementation. He was a visiting fellow in the University of Sydney in 2002. He has made academic visits in Australia, Poland, Scotland, Bangkok and Nepal and has conducted many workshops in the area of applied statistics and research methodology.

Great book to supplement a nanoscale heat transfer course. The text is laid out in a way that it is very readable and you are able to teach yourself the material.

This book is very useful for my research work. Although the first few chapters are summaries of what one learns in different courses, the "parallel treatment" is a good concept. And the last few chapters are getting deeper.

Very good quality book. Advanced math, graduate level book for sure. Good for multidisciplinary studies in engineering.

Drug dealers with delusions of grandeur populate this colorful but overwrought history of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, a 1960s-era narcotics ring–cum–hippie church. Influenced by psychedelic prophet Timothy Leary—who called the group's leader, former high school bully John Griggs, the holiest man in America—the California-based Brotherhood styled its cheap, extra-strength Orange Sunshine brand of LSD as a pathway to God. Journalist Schou (Kill the Messenger) takes the spiritual purpose of these psychedelic warriors, along with their solemn acid-dropping sacraments and utopian pipe dreams, rather too seriously. (He likewise inflates their sporadic ventures scoring Mexican marijuana and Afghan hashish into a global smuggling empire.) His narrative quickly devolves into a haphazard picaresque of drug deals, drug busts, overdoses, surfing, rock concerts (Jimi Hendrix does a cameo), orgies, and people living in teepees. Schou sometimes forgets that reading about other people's acid trips—The whole sky took on huge forms of dancing Buddhas and the energy got really bright—is a drag. Still, the mixture of lively freakery and stoned pomposity gives his portrait of countercultural excess an authentic period feel. (Mar.)

The Brotherhood of Eternal Love was a group of 1960s hippie visionaries with a plan. Imagine an America in which LSD is a common source of inspiration and insight for the whole populace, and the pronouncements of Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, and other academic space cowboys are prized philosophical touchstones. Such, more or less, was the group’s goal as producer-distributors of the famous Orange Sunshine LSD that was a part of campus all over America in the late ’60s.
