I have now read all three of the late Earle Stanley Gardner's non-fiction books on the California Delta. They are all his love story about the magic alternative life style of hanging out in the California Delta in his River Queen houseboats back in the 1960s. Although I already know a lot about the Delta because I have chosen to retire there in this almost mythical heaven for boaters that is not even shown on regular automobile maps (you have to purchase a special map online through the Delta Chamber of Commerce or local marinas), it was a pleasure to take an arm chair cruise with the author of Perry Mason novels and TV show. He told how he would write in the mornings and cruise in the afternoon and frequently play penny ante with his buddies all night. He had a second River Queen houseboat for his staff, so, when he and his buddies would play penny ante, Gardner would have his wife stay in the other houseboat with his female staff associates and everyone was happy because the men wouldn't have to be lectured on their housekeeping and the women enjoyed their pajama party. The great thing about anyone who reads the book and gets excited about this lifestyle is some of the Mom and Pop waterfront restaurants mentioned like Guisti's and Wimpy's are still here today, a half century later! It was also enjoyable to see photos of the early construction of Tiki Lagun Marina in Stockton. Gardner also did a good job of weaving in the Chinese history that is an integral part of the Delta. Today houseboats have gotten more elegant and most boaters have evolved to motorized yachts that have all the comforts of home, too. But every time I cruise the canals and rivers of the Delta in the future, I will have the romantic notion now of thinking I'm cruising in the houseboat wake of the Perry Mason author, Earle Stanley Gardner!
A good yarn about the old days of the Sacramento Delta....a vast and unique group of waterways many Californians don't know exists....a bit simplistic, but interesting book....this copy was a first print, signed by the author.
